The direct antiglobulin test (DAT) is performed to detect antibodies, specifically IgG1 or IgG3 immunoglobulin subgroup antibodies or complement proteins, that are attached to the patient’s red blood cell. This test helps to diagnose and manage immune-mediated destruction of erythrocytes in conditions such as auto-immune hemolytic anemia and drug-induced hemolytic anemias.
