The test aids doctors in assessing folate deficiency and implementing treatment for pregnant women to reduce neonatal defects. Patient should be fasting, it is also advisable to avoid multivitamins containing biotin for previous 12 hours before the blood draw.

Collect a fasting blood sample. Avoid taking multivitamins containing biotin for at least 12 hours prior to blood collection.  Folate is light-sensitive; minimize exposure to light during specimen storage.
