The urinary qualitative porphobilinogen test detects the presence of the pyrrole derivative Porphobilinogen (PBG), essential in heme synthesis. Elevated PBG levels are associated porphobilinogen deaminase enzyme deficiencies. Clinically, symptoms include dysautonomia, neuropathy, psychiatric manifestations, and severe abdominal pain episodes. This screening test used as swift diagnosis in acute intermittent porphyria, variegate porphyria, or hereditary coproporphyria.
